Bhapa Sandesh

Bhapa Sandesh or Steamed Sandesh is made with freshly made chenna, sugar and saffron and is a very popular dessert in Bengal. It is easy to make and with very few ingredients.


Sandesh was originated in the 16th century in Bengal. The name Sandesh can be found in old Bengali literature - Ramayana (Krittibas) and lyrics of Chaitanya.


The modern recipe is quite different from the original one where the latter mainly used solidified kheer. The modern way of making Sandesh from chhena came from the Portuguese.
